CJC had great results at the 2011 Wichita Frostbite Regatta. Twelve of our twenty-four rowers came away with medals. Wichita is a challenging regatta. The course is 1.7 miles long and winds through three bridges. Our coxwains, both racing for the first time, did an outstanding job on this technically challenging course. All three eights were in events in which they were competing against college teams. Perhaps the most impressive performance was put in by the mixed eight, which was in a race with 27 other boats, twenty-three of which were college teams. They finished an impressive eleventh, second among club boats, beating twelve college crews. The women's eight and men's four both took bronze medals. The four rowers in the men's four were forced to row less than twenty minutes after finishing in the men's eight. In an impressive display of teamwork, the other rowers carried down their boat, carried up the eight and even brought them food and water. Racing against better rested crews, they were only two seconds out of silver, despite a ten second penalty for hitting a buoy. The men's eight missed medals by six seconds, ironically missing out to a University of Colorado boat. The women's four raced hard, finishing seventh due to a thirty second buoy penalty, without which they would have been challenging for a medal. All of the rowers put in great performances and came away as one of the top junior teams at the regatta.
