Our Coaches

Roman Sammartino, Head Coach

Roman began his rowing journey with the esteemed Oakland Strokes Juniors, earning silver in Western Regionals as a Novice. He continued to excel at the University of Colorado, stroking both the Novice 8+ and 2V. He gained international experience at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, achieving fourth place in Champ 8+ and winning the Club 4- at Uni Games. Roman's dedication led him to coaching Novice at CU and refining his skills at the Institute for Rowing Leadership. He also coached at Boston University under Olympic medalist Tom Bohrer. As head coach at CU, Roman's first season was a remarkable sweep of gold medals in Men's Open events at the Wichita Frostbite Regatta, despite the spring being cut short by COVID. We’re so thrilled to have Roman return to CJC in Fall '23!

Elliott Lane, Novice Coach

Elliott has been coaching with CJC since 2021 and is a head Women's Coach for University of Colorado. With an impressive career, in the 2021-2022 season, Coach Lane's boats included:

 * 1st place San Diego Crew Classic DII/DIII/Club W4+
 * 3rd place ARCA W4
 * 4th place Head of the Charles W4+
 * Several successful novice boats, placing highly in their respective A-Finals

Coach Lane brings with him 24 years of coaching experience with a number of teams, including Georgetown University, Loyola University of Maryland, and an assortment of high school programs.  He is a USRowing Level III certified coach.  We’re thrilled to have his expertise and continued dedication to our team.

 

Trivia:  Coach Lane is also a US Triathlon certified coach.  As an Ironman triathlete, he has represented Team USA at the World Championship Level. 

Dante Orozco, Assistant Coach

Dante is a former CJC rower who has returned as an assistant coach for Fall '23.


Assistant Coaches Wanted

 Colorado Junior Crew (CJC) is hiring two assistant coaches. We are looking for experienced rowers who may or may not have coaching experience. We will train the right candidates! CJC offers sweep rowing and sculling to athletes from 8th-12th grade.  Practice is held at the Boulder Reservoir in Boulder, Colorado, Mondays- Thursdays 4:30-6:30 pm and Saturdays, 9:00-11:00 am. Our Fall season runs August 22- November 10; Winter, January 4- March 8; and Spring, March 15-June 15.  We also offer coaching opportunities in the summer.  CJC is  accepting applications for seasonal or year round positions.
